WHAT TO WEAR?

It's natural to be nervous about getting your photo taken but we will do our best to make you feel relaxed and have fun.

If you have any questions about the session please call our office and we would be happy to discuss your thoughts and plan ahead with you.

Listed below are a few basic suggestions regarding clothing and session planning. We look forward to working with you!

GENERAL TIPS

Check out some of our image galleries to get inspiration on what others have worn for their sessions.

Avoid large prints, bold patterns, or heavy stripes that may distract from your face and draw the eye away from the subject. Steer clear of tight grid or herringbone patterns, as they can cause a moiré effect on camera.

Remember to dress from head to toe—if we decide to take full-length shots, you’ll want to be ready!

Stick with a hairstyle you feel comfortable with, and avoid any drastic changes or new cuts right before the session.

For a polished look, use hairspray to tame flyaways—retouching them can be costly and time-consuming.

FORMAL LOOKS

Choose a professional suit or outfit with a classic look.  Suits should fit you well and be a dark neutral color like navy, blue or gray.

Shirts should also fit well, be a solid, neutral color and long sleeves are best.  If you prefer a short sleeve or tank top, bring a blazer or sweater to put over it for some additional options.  Shirts that include a buttoned collar should be fastened.

Necklines should be at a respectable height.  V-necks can accentuate the neckline.  Turtlenecks can tend to make people look like they have no neck.

Choose a tie with a subtle pattern and a tone that is a medium between the shirt and jacket.  Avoid shiny or reflective ties.

If you plan to wear a button-down shirt without a tie, it's best to wear a jacket or sweater of some kind to layer the look.  If you prefer only a button-down shirt, choose a dark color, unbutton a button or two and make sure we can't see your undershirt beneath.

Avoid bold, distracting patterns or colors unless you plan to layer them with a plain blazer or sweater.

OTHER DETAILS

If you have a beard or mustache, make sure it’s neatly trimmed for a polished look. Otherwise, a fresh shave is always a great choice!

Normal makeup works well—our lighting will highlight your natural features, so no need for extra layers.

For casual portraits, don’t forget about your nails and toenails—freshly manicured hands will make a difference!

When it comes to jewelry, choose simple, and classic items that reflect your style. Avoid reflective or flashy pieces, and for earrings, opt for ones that stay close to the earlobe for a timeless look.

GROUPS

For groups of 3 or more, select 1-3 solid colors that everyone can incorporate into their outfits. Choose one neutral color—such as tan, white, black, or jeans—to tie the group together.

While it's important for people to show their individuality, make sure the colors blend well with the group as a whole.

If you prefer everyone in the same color, ensure the shades match closely. For example, if everyone wears light blue but one person has a navy shirt, that person may stand out more than intended.

Also, try to avoid too much white, as it can sometimes be overwhelming in group photos.

GLASSES

If you wear glasses, be sure to wear them for your portrait. However, keep in mind that reflective glare from your lenses can be difficult to avoid until you're in the studio.

To completely eliminate any potential issues, consider borrowing a pair of empty frames (without lenses) from your optician that match your style. Removing glare from glasses can be costly, so it’s best to prepare ahead of time.
